Journal Entry #10

How have your thoughts toward school changed?

To be honest, my thoughts towards school have definitely become more negative. With finals being canceled, grades not allowed to go lower (with the exception of incomplete), and lots of content being cut out of the class curriculums, I have somewhat given up on school. I do a lot less work, not to say I don’t put effort into classes still, but it is much less than before remote learning. I just hope that we will be able to get through these rough times and get back on track in time for the 20-21 school year.

The Struggle for a Better World  Prior to reading Between the World and Me , I was under the impression that everyone collectively would be responsible for “the birth of a better world”. But when Coates tells his son that “a better world is not ultimately up to you,'' he is referring to the fact that it is ultimately up to the wealthy Americans in power that refer to themselves at white, and that young black men (like Samori) are not able to make such advances in life. In the beginning of the novel, the Ta-Nehisi Coates describes his recollection of an interview with a popular news show host. Coates says that she asked him about his body, but soon after asks about “hope”, as he discloses that “I knew that I had failed” (10). The news host is almost completely disregarding the words he had supplied for her previous question. His ideas of how America is and always has been white America don’t go through to her. She seems to be convinced that the prejudice towards African-Am...
My junior theme focused on how the U.S. is falling behind in the global tech revolution. All around the world, advancements are being made with biotechnology, smart devices, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and more. However, the U.S. is not leading the charge in these disciplines, as the United States is ranked 21st in the world for overall internet speed (Ookla). This lack of leadership in the tech revolution is caused by lack of net neutrality regulations and the subsequent monopolistic nature of internet service providers (ISPs).  When first researching for my junior theme, I was looking solely into net neutrality. This is because I thought that the question of why America lacks net neutrality rules has an answer deeply rooted in the history of our country. I thought that just because Ajit Pai repealed them. But after looking into the issue for long enough, my opinion of favoring net neutrality did not change, and I realized that my question was pretty shallow. I ...

What are you reading? Watching? Listening to? I am reading more news and tweets during this time. I feel I should uninstall twitter because scrolling through and reading comment sections can be very frustrating. On the other hand, I have been taking more time to watch a show on Netflix called “All-American”. I finished it a couple days ago, and am glad to hear there is a third season coming out who knows when. I’m not usually the one to watch Netflix, but being in this situation means I have plenty of time to watch plenty of entertainment. I also am watching more TikToks because they often are very funny and a good way to pass time. On a completely different note, I also am watching more CNBC because I have become more and more interested in business and the stock market, which CNBC specializes in on weekdays. Finally, I am listening to more Spotify these days, mostly when I’m working out. I like listening to new music, as well as classic reggae, alternative, rock, and 90s hip-hop...
